Last week I told you the best home isn’t a house: it’s a house yacht. I promised to break that name down. Let’s take it word by word.
House: A solar-electric house yacht is first and foremost a home. Unlike most other yachts on the market, it is designed as a movable floating house, not a boat with accommodations squeezed in as an afterthought. Think king beds, full-sized kitchens, residential plumbing, and space for the family to relax. From the inside, it feels just like a waterfront house or condominium. It is also conditioned like a house: sufficient power for constant air conditioning and dehumidification which not only increases comfort but also the lifespan of your belongings.

Yacht: Keeping true to the yacht name, this is not simply a houseboat either. It is fully capable of moving through inland waters as well as coastal cruising and even ocean passages. It’s engineered to CE Category A, the standard expected of an ocean-crossing vessel. In fact, True North Yachts has demonstrated that solar-electric can often outperform sail in typical cruising conditions. It won’t outrun a powerboat, but it doesn’t need to. A house yacht will get you there safely and allow you to enjoy both the destination and the journey.
Solar-Electric: Finally, it is designed around a solar-electric architecture. With recent advances in solar panels and lithium batteries, true energy self-sufficiency is possible for both propulsion and domestic needs. Moreover, an electric-first system is more reliable and has minimal maintenance. No fuel bills in normal operation. No sails to manage, no diesel engine to maintain: just quiet electric propulsion with a backup generator for the rare week the sun doesn’t cooperate. Without worrying about rationing power, you can also enjoy constant air conditioning, fresh and hot water, and power for all your comforts of home.
In summary, a solar-electric house yacht combines the comfort of a waterfront condominium with the freedom of a yacht.
So, you've got your house yacht. Where do you anchor for the first month? Reply and tell me. I answer everyone personally.
The next update will discuss why solar-electric house yachts are now possible.
